Orly's/The Big Easy: 'Evidence of Rodents on Site'

-posted by chicago pop

Despite what was breezily reported in the Herald today ("Fridge Fritz Foils Big Easy," Lindsay Welbers, September 5, 2012), the recent shut-down of the culinary dark-star which, however many aliases it may assume in order to distance itself from its past, will always be known as Orly's, it appears that the restaurant's recent shutdown by the Chicago Department of Public Health was much more than a refrigerator problem.

Highlights of the recent report (dated August 27, 2012), written in mouth-watering detail and sure to annotate the next version of the menu, include but are not limited to: mice droppings in container of corn meal; sewage and waste-water backup on floor; a cooler with internal temperature of 95F; waste-water overflowing from drain; foul odor in women's toilet (and other places); evidence of rodents on site; mice droppings behind the bar, storage rooms, and dining area; my own personal favorite here - 'rodent rub marks'; extreme grease and food debris buildup; dirty surfaces; dust, debris, and spiderwebs (!); and broken tiles

But I guess that's all been fixed now.

Disgusting. Not surprising though, as we had problems with mice when I lived upstairs. The old woman who lived across the hall from me (and was a hoarder along the lines of that horrifying TV show) used to complain about mice all the time and when I was in the process of packing to move, I found a dead mouse behind my guitar amp that I'm assuming one of my cats had caught and killed.

The apartment building is managed by TLC. I don't know if they also handle the retail units downstairs, which consist of Orly's and the quickie mart. I also don't know who actually owns the property. It would be nice to find out who does and petition them to revoke Shopiro's lease and get someone else in there. He has one of the best locations in the whole neighborhood for a restaurant and/or bar, it's a shame that it has been flip flopped and mismanaged for ages.

Did anyone else notice on Everyblock that they've been inspected no fewer than 8 TIMES since February and have failed EVERY SINGLE INSPECTION? They were inspected 5 times in June alone.

Greg - I would venture to guess TLC does manage the commercial aspects, based solely on the on the TLC vacancy signs I have seen on Madison Park for their corner commercial space.

Also HOLY HELL why hasn't the city revoked his license or something yet? Seriously?

Though, really, I shouldn't be as surprised as I am by any of this.

I noticed the Herald had no Letters to the Editor this week, and so their LTE policy wasn't there. I e-mailed them to ask for their deadline and policy because I'd like to give them an opportunity to rectify their story which was either grossly inept or a blatant cover up. A longstanding restaurant with this level of health code violations needs to be reported accurately and the story blaming the whole thing on a broken cooler is suspicious. If the Herald knew about these inspection failures and apparently massive rodent infestation and did not report it they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

News good enough to get Orly's "rodent rub marks" out of my head:

I love the name. Maybe the new headquarters for the Hyde Park-weary "Fix the Point" campaign?
