Failure count is now up to 11. There's a Spinal Tap joke in there somewhere.

Does anyone know how many chances the city inspectors typically give someone before they revoke their license altogether? Their first listed failed inspection was last February, so it would seem Mr. Shopiro has had ample time to find "sane management".

Does Kitchen Nightmares take suggestions for restaurants to go to? Gordon Ramsay would have a field day with Orly's/Jalapeno/Big Easy.

I walk by this place all the time. The sad dying plants in the windows do not make it look like anybody's been home for awhile.

Is it too hopeful to wonder if this could be the end of Shopiro-mania at 55th and South Hyde Park?

    Greg: Hilarious!
David Farley: I think you're right - the new fad game of 2013: Where's Shopiro?
Chason: Maybe the end of Shopiro's mania and the birth of the giant mutant cockroach from Orly's that ate the Museum of Science and Industry.

This place would have to be gutted and rehabbed to pass an inspection.

Replacement of dying plants with new (soon-to-be-dying) verions in the windows suggests that Shopiro isn't leaving anytime soon.

Pop, how about a piece on Leslie Hairston's pathetic 28% attendance rate at City Hall committee?

    They continue to fail re-inspections.

This is by no means a user-friendly application, but it is the most up to date for city inspections.

    Create a filter for license # 1978. That's Shopiro's license.

They list a total of 17 inspections here going back to July of 2011. They managed to pass a couple of reinspections, with the last pass happening last March. Since then, they have been re-inspected 12 times and failed every one. After the 9/20 inspection Pop links to at Everyblock, they failed again on 9/26, 10/1, and 10/5.

    Commons from the 10/5 inspections:

"We continue to observe non-compliance evidence of Rodents still present throughout premises(more than 50 droppings) at the kitchen, bar and dining area and at this time owner requested for us to stop the inspection."

"MUST CLEAN INTERIOR OF FREEZERS(REMOVE ALL OLD FOOD ITEMS) ALSO DETAIL CLEAN WINDOW SILLS,LEDGES & ALL DIRTY SURFACES THROUGHOUT. EVERYTHING MUST BE FREE OF DUST,DEBRIS,DROPPINGS & GREASE."

"REMOVE POOLING WATER FROM FLOORS ON INTERIOR OF WALK IN COOLER. MUST PROPERLY REPAIR BROKEN FLOOR TILES IN BAR AREA UNDER SMALL PREP COOLER. FLOOR MUST BE SMOOTH,EVEN & EASILY CLEANABLE."

"SPRAYER AT THE DISH MACHINE COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF. MUST REPAIR. ALSO,REPAIR LEAK AT DISH MACHINE HOT WATER BOOSTER."

I'm really surprised the residents or the convenience store next to Orly's have not raised hell about this.

I wanted to write a letter to the Editor for the Herald asking them why they haven't covered this, but they haven't responded to any of my e-mails for a few years. I must be on their enemies list or something.

To my horror last night, the door to Orly's was open, with people inside. The "sane management" sign has been replaced with one declaring they are open, "so get your butt in here."

And they posted the sign too high for the rats to read.

Clearly, I just need to open a restaurant in Hyde Park. So long as I don't have a lease with the University, I'll never go out of business!

David Shopiro is very sick. I find it hard to imagine he will want to run orlys for more than a few more years.
