Hyde Park's Best Public Art

posted by chicago pop

The concrete dolphin children's fountain in Bessie Coleman Park, on Drexel at 54th Place, hands down. How could you not love this one? Who needs Sea World?

Stay tuned for a jam session on the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, and whether one of HP's oldest voluntary organizations can stay alive in the 21st Century.

Prognosis: Maybe. But it won't be business-as-usual.

Can I argue with this (as cute as that sculpture is)? As far as fountain sculptures go, I have a fondness for the David Wallach Memorial Fountain (the bronze fawn at the Point). Regarding non-fountain sculpture, the Linnaeus and the Blanik Mountain Knight on the Midway are excellent. Nuclear Energy is both a sentimental winner (because I played on it as a child) and our biggest tourist draw. And although it's probably technically in Washington Park, Lorado Taft's Fountain of Time is the hands-down public art triumph of our neighborhood. Fewer 70s murals and more of that, please.

Lay off the concrete dolphin.

Actually, in the category of non-playground stuff, I think the bronze fawn at the Point is the absolute tops. I haven't seen anything else like it. Makes me smile everytime I walk past it. (Just like the concrete dolphin :)
